History

Leader. For the modernization of fast passenger traffic, the Dutch Railways needed new rolling stock in the mid-1970s. In the densely populated country, flexible trains are essential to handle traffic in the urban areas. Therefore, from 1977 to 1994, a total of 144 trainsets, the Koploper family, were put into service, which can be quickly and easily separated and coupled at stations. It also proved important to enable passengers to switch from one unit to another while in motion. For this reason, the cab was decisively moved one story upwards, and the motor units were equipped with transitions at the fronts. This configuration gives the Koploper trains a rugged, extraordinary appearance. The Koploper trains were built by Talbot, CEM Oerlikon, and Holec, and were incorporated by the Dutch Railways as series 4000 and 4200, distinguished among other things by different motorizations. Until recently, the Koploper trains underwent a modernization wave, in which they were equipped with air conditioning and facilities for disabled passengers. The trainsets, capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h, operate in the classic color schemes of NS but are also often used as advertising surfaces, such as for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Koploper trains are undoubtedly a successful development in rail vehicle technology, and with their unusual appearance, they clearly define passenger traffic in the Netherlands.

New, see the axes and wheel contact surfaces in impeccable condition with accessories ('Scharffenberg' coupling connection).
