Portmeirion – 'Botanic Garden' Service – Old Plate & Set of 4 Mugs – Susan Williams-Ellis
General description:
Magnificent set from the famous 'Botanic Garden' collection published by Portmeirion, the iconic British manufacturer founded in Wales in 1960 by designer Susan Williams-Ellis.
The Botanic Garden series, launched in 1972, quickly became one of the most recognizable services in the history of decorative tableware. It is prized for its botanical illustrations inspired by old books from the 18th and 19th centuries, its romantic style, and its quality of craftsmanship.
This set includes:
1 antique plate from Portmeirion – 'Botanic Garden' – diameter 27 cm
Set of four assorted mugs – height 10.5 cm – diameter 8.5 cm
Details of the old dish (27 cm)
Collection: Botanic Garden
Motif: Fritillaria with butterflies.
Diameter: 27 cm
Signature / Mark on the back: Stamp 'The Botanic Garden – Portmeirion – circa 1818'.
Particularity: This type of mark on the back is typical of the early generations of the collection, which may indicate manufacturing prior to recent versions.
Condition: Presence of uniform cracking due to age (glaze crackle), very common on older pieces and sought after by collectors. No chips visible in the photos.
Details of the 4 mugs set
Height: 10.5 cm
Diameter: 8.5 cm
Collection: Botanic Garden
Various floral motifs, typical of the range (poppy, sunflower, hydrangea, sweet pea, etc.)
Excellent condition; original box present.
Marking: Portmeirion Botanic Garden – 'Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis' – Made in China (modern official production).
Usage: Compatible with dishwashers and microwaves.
Origin & History
The Botanic Garden collection is one of the biggest successes in British decorative dishware.
Designed by Susan Williams-Ellis, it is inspired by old botanical engravings, notably those by Thomas Green and other naturalist illustrators. Each piece features a different flower, surrounded by a border of laurel leaves that has become the emblem of the collection.
The first editions (like the piece presented here) are particularly sought after by collectors, especially when they show natural cracking indicative of age.
A highly appreciated decorative ensemble for cottage, shabby chic, or Victorian atmospheres.
This set therefore presents a great opportunity for enthusiasts of English design, botany, or collectible tableware.
General condition
Plate: vintage in good condition with natural craquelure (see photos).
Mugs: excellent condition, no chips, fresh colors, box included.
The photos are an integral part of the description.
Very careful shipment with tracking.
