Spearhead with rat-tail tang, Bronze Age bronze weapon circa 1200–600 BC, L 29.2 cm x W 5.7 cm, with green patina and surface encrustations in good condition; provenance: Ex. London Collection.
Description from the seller
A finely cast Bronze Age bronze spearhead, featuring a large, wide leaf-shaped blade with round, sloping shoulders and a prominent central midrib. From the blade, a 'rat-tail' tang descends, curving at the base. This would have been inserted into a wooden shaft. A beautiful green patina and earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as minor chips to the edges of the blade and scratches.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites settled in the Western Asiatic region. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of these bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Most of these bronze items have been recovered in funerary contexts.
Measurements: L 29.2cm x W 5.7cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
