(*) AR Penck was a painter, engraver, and sculptor born in 1939 in Dresden and died in 2017 in Zurich. He attempted to enroll at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1956 but was rejected, primarily due to his communist beliefs. In 1968, Ralf Winkler adopted the name AR Penck, a pseudonym inspired by geologist Albrecht Penck. He is recognized for the rebellious character of Rembrandt, who, like him, was an outsider. AR Penck risked working according to his Marxist ideals in the GDR. His works were censored, and he was stripped of his nationality. His art recalls that of great modernists: Picasso, Kirchner, Klee, Giacometti, but retains a more savage, raw aspect, approaching graffiti. His universe is filled with colorful characters, symbols, assembled in a wild manner. He developed his language to 'represent beings in action.' He called this pictorial style: Standart. As soon as he left West Germany in 1980, rejection turned into success; he won the Rembrandt Prize in Basel in 1981 and the Aix-la-Chapelle Art Prize in 1985. He was the subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and at the Maeght Foundation.
