Russian Orthodox cross in bronze – 19th century - Gospod Sabaoth and Crucifixion
Dimensions: H 16 cm – L 10 cm
Material: cast bronze
Period: 19th century
Russian Orthodox cross in cast bronze, from the tradition of the Old Believers (Старообрядцы) of the 19th century.
The cross presents a complete iconographic composition.
Upper part: the image of the Father Eternal (Gospod Sabaoth), flanked by two angels.

- Center: Christ Crucified with inscription IC XC (Jesus Christ) and the typical elongated position of the
Body, a characteristic of Russian workshops of the period.
The lateral inscriptions in ecclesiastical Slavic are those traditional.

The iconography is rich and complete.
Upper section: God the Father (Gospod Sabaoth) with two angels.
Central section: Crucifixion of Christ with the inscription IC XC, and elongated figure typical of Old Believers’ bronze icons.
Side inscriptions read:
King of Glory
Son of God
Side figures
Left: the Three Marys
Right: Longinus the Centurion and another soldier.
- Lower section: Mount Golgotha with the Skull of Adam, symbolizing Christ’s victory over
death
Condition: very good. Strong patina, crisp casting, no cracks or repairs.
