Dagger with Flanged Hilt, a Bronze Age bronze blade dating ca. 1200–600 BC, measuring 38.9 cm by 4.7 cm, in good condition with a dark green patina and surface encrustations, provenance Ex. London Collection (1990–present) and acquired in 2000.
Description from the seller
A finely cast Bronze Age bronze dagger, featuring a triangular blade with a flattened mid-rib. The hilt, featuring a rectangular guard and a wedge-shaped pommel, is flanged and would have been designed to accommodate an inlaid wood or bone panel. A beautiful dark green patination and earthly encrustations to the surface. Sign of wear as consistent with its age, such as scratches and chips to the edges of the blade and flanges.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the Western Asiatic area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Archaeological evidence suggests that the bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
Measurements: L 38.9cm x W 4.7cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas.
