Bronze Age spike-butted axehead, cast bronze, about 20 cm long and 7.6 cm wide, with a cylindrical shaft-hole and four furrowed ribs, in good condition; provenance Ex London Collection, acquired in 2000 from a private collection.
Description from the seller
A Bonze Age cast bronze spike-butted axe head, featuring a cylindrical shaft-hole with four furrowed ribs terminating at the back with short, thick spikes. The blade extends out from the top of the shaft-hole and springs from the third rib down at the bottom in a downward curve, forming a narrow neck. The upper and lower edge of the blade are strengthened by a thickened rim. Some patination and earthly encrustation remain on the surface.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites settled in the Western Asiatic region. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of these bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Most of these bronze items have been recovered in funerary contexts.
Measurements: L 20cm x W 7.6cm
Provenance: Ex London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
N.B. Delivery may be longer due to the busier period and we do not guarantee delivery before Christmas. Items paid for after the 19th December will be shipped after the New Year (week commencing on the 5th January 2026). **There will be an additional fee incurred for returned shipments due to buyer’s non-response to customs enquiries and/or unsuccessful delivery attempts.**
