Hand carved teak Bali calendar on a stand, dating from Bali with a patinated finish and a 210 day Pawukon cycle used for auspicious days and ceremonies.
Description from the seller
Hand-carved wooden traditional calendar based on the Pawukon cycle. The Pawukon ritual calendar was used to determine auspicious days for fertility and also to identify ceremonial events and horoscopes.
Originating from Bali, Indonesia. An incredibly beautiful patina of the old paint and the aged hardwood reflects the antiquity of this item well. This Pawukon calendar contains no letters, but geometric figures such as dots, triangles, dashes, and circles that symbolize the different auspicious days. For clarity, this is a truly old, fully hand-painted, and original piece!
The Pawukon calendar is one of the two calendar systems used by the Balinese. It consists of 210 days instead of the usual 365, and is made up of ten weekly cycles that occur simultaneously. Each weekly cycle has a different number of days, and when the first or last days of different cycles coincide, it is considered a special day.
