AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Extremely large sea snail ADELOMELON BECKII

Huge large sea snail, 45.5 cm tall, from Uruguay.
From Punta del Este, on the Atlantic coast, brought back from there at the end of the 1990s.
The scientific name is Adelomelon beckii (Broderip, 1836).
This type belongs to the Volutidae (volutes), characterized by folds on the columella (the inner spindle axis) and a wide aperture.

The size of almost 46 cm is remarkable, given the measured world record size of this kind.
It measures just over 49 cm. The previous owner marked on the inside in Spanish: 'Record Caracol 48 cts.', meaning record snail 48 cm. This could be correct, as a small piece of the oldest coil (the so-called Protoconch) is missing at the tip, and there might also be some breakage at the opening canal below. (see detailed photos)

The outside of the shell was coated with a dark protective lacquer layer by the previous owner in Uruguay, possibly to preserve the outer layer.
This paint layer can probably be removed with a solvent if desired. However, I have not tried this myself.

Carefully packed and shipped with tracking.
Adelomelon is not a protected CITES species, so there are no restrictions.
