Description from the seller
Aalto 95 half-moon table in wood, 120 x 60 cm. Alvar Aalto, 1933. ***NEW PRICE ON OFFER***
Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976) was one of the most famous Finnish architects and designers. The 'Aalto Tables' series is part of the L-leg collection initiated by Alvar Aalto in the early 1930s. Published in 1933, the Aalto half-moon table can be easily placed against a wall, optimizing the use of available space. Ideal for compact kitchens, it can also be used as a console: in a hallway. When combined, two round tables can form a large round table perfect for dining. Its dimensions fit perfectly with other formats of the Aalto Table, allowing for a variety of configurations.
As early as 1927, in close collaboration with the cabinetmaker Otto Korhonen, Aalto developed a patented process for bending solid wood at a 90° angle, which in 1932 gave rise to the famous Aalto foot (also known as the L-leg). A small revolution for an era still dominated by metal.
By inserting veneer sheets into the carvings of each foot, the birch wood gained the necessary flexibility to be bent into the desired L-shape. For the first time, this new wood bending technique will allow the feet to be anchored directly under the seat, without the need for any additional frame or structure.
Originally designed for the famous 'Sgabello 60', the L-shaped leg quickly became a characteristic feature of the ARTEK collection: L-shaped legs of various sizes and angles are used in the construction of many stools, chairs, benches, and tables within the ARTEK collection.
When asked to evaluate his importance as a designer and architect, Alvar Aalto said that his greatest achievement was the L-shaped leg, which was significant because it solved a very old problem—the attachment of chair and table legs—in a completely new way: the L-shaped leg was screwed directly into the surface, without intermediate pieces, creating a solid structure from the start. The curves of the foot give the furniture a certain elegance and fluidity, making it less austere despite its apparent simplicity.
All ARTEK wooden furniture is produced at the factory in Turku, Finland, using local wood. They combine modern manufacturing methods with craftsmanship skills and carefully selected materials.
