Description from the seller
Fossil Matrix Box – Ammonite on the Lid and Orthoceras in the Rock (Morocco)
This box is carved from a single block of black fossil matrix from Morocco, a sedimentary stone rich in evidence of the Paleozoic sea. The surface, hand-polished, highlights the clear and clean shapes of Orthoceras, the straight-shelled cephalopods that lived over 350 million years ago. Their internal chambers, clearly visible in section, create a natural design that appears precisely engraved.
The lid is adorned with a well-preserved ammonite, with the calcite spiral standing out sharply against the dark background of the rock. The natural fractures and lighter veins are part of the fossil's history: they mark the passage of time, geological movements, and the slow process of fossilization.
The shape of the box is essential, cylindrical, designed to highlight the raw material. The interior, smooth and partly left more raw, preserves the naturalness of the original stone. It is an object that combines function and collecting: a container with a sober style, but with a strong aesthetic and historical presence.
An ideal piece for lovers of paleontology, curiosities cabinets, and decor objects made from natural materials with millions of years of history imprinted in their structure.
