Book description:
In Name Tagging, graffiti photography legend Martha Cooper presents a dizzying array of “Hello My Name Is” stickers adorned with tags, the origin of graffiti and today’s street art cultures. Interviews with ZEPHYR, COST, EDEC, CLAW, TWIST, SURE & FAUST, COSBE, ALONE, CAHBASM, OVERCONSUME and EARWORM reveal the history of this tradition as well as shed light on how some of today’s most prolific writers get up. These interviews and photographs document how artists famous and anonymous take advantage of the accessibility and practicality of nametag stickers. Cooper’s camera has captured the artistry and audacity of these artists and their distinctive tags.
About the artist:
Martha Cooper is a photojournalist born in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1940s. She currently lives in Manhattan. She specializes in reporting on everyday urban art & architecture and was the first to document the breakdance and graffiti movements in New York City.
Beginning in 1977, she worked for three years as a staff photographer for the New York Post. During this period, she began photographing graffiti and breakdancing, subjects that led to her extensive coverage of early Bronx hip-hop.
Martha Cooper's books are bibles on hip-hop, graffiti, breakdancing, and '70s subversive culture, and include Subway Art, RIP Memorial Wall Art, We B*Girlz, Street Play, New York State of Mind, Tag Town, and Going Postal.
Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and published in numerous magazines from National Geographic to Vibe. Martha Cooper was also the director of photography at City Lore.
Description of the work:
Street Play traces the lives of street children in the late 70s in New York, well before the advent of video games, smartphones, MP3s, etc., well before the urban renewal of the city when children could play and wander around unsupervised in vacant lots.
Martha Cooper immortalized all these moments in black and white photos, with an introduction by Calos Mare 139 Rodriguez who grew up on the streets of New York.
