Nephrite is a mixed crystal from the continuous solid solution series of the minerals Tremolite and Actinolite. It is not recognized as a distinct mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA).
If nephrite consists of masses of intertwined microcrystalline fibers, it is called jade. This material, also known as nephrite jade, is processed into highly sought-after gemstones and decorative objects, but it differs chemically from jade mainly composed of jadeite. The colors of nephrite are caused by chromium and iron and range from gray-green to dark green and almost black, but the color can also shift to reddish-brown.
The term nephrite comes from the Greek νεφρός nephros and means 'kidney' in translation. An old folk belief attributes healing and strengthening effects primarily to the kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Esoteric practitioners also believe in its effectiveness as a healing stone for eyesight, creativity, among other things, as well as a protective stone, although these claims have not been scientifically proven.
Nephrite axes were sought after and, due to their rarity, valuable tools in Europe's Neolithic period.
Shipping as insured registered mail.
