Description from the seller
First French monograph dedicated to Kawase Hasui.
First edition from 2011 in nearly new condition.
Heir to the landscape painters of the ukiyo-e painting school, Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) is one of the leading representatives of a long tradition of Japanese print painters in the first half of the 20th century.
By following the thematic groupings of prints, he aligns himself with the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' or the 'Selections of Landscapes of the Tokaido' in the tradition of renowned Japanese site painters, following the path laid out by Hokusai (1760-1849) in his 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' and Hiroshige (1797-1858) in his 'One Hundred Views of Edo'.
An indefatigable traveler and nature lover, Hasui faithfully depicted the monuments and regions of his country, blending an idealized nature with precise architectural forms.
Throughout this invitation to discover Japan, Hasui establishes himself as the painter of atmospheres, capturing their various nuances: the cold winter light, the sparkle of blossoms, or the continuous rains at the beginning of summer.
Hasui's work evokes an impression of timelessness, but also a touch of melancholy, probably due to the absence of characters in most of the prints.
Hasui remains little known in Europe, where the history of Japanese prints, for many collectors, has stopped at the artists of the Edo period.
Number of pages: 88
Dimensions: 25.7 x 33.6 x 1.5 cm
