Description from the seller
Ishiuchi Miyako's (1947-) photo book "1 9 4 7" is a collection of works created between January 1988 and January 1989.
The book features close-up photographs of the hands and feet of women born in the same year as Ishiuchi, with each photograph captioned with the subject's occupation.
The sharp depiction of bodily details—fingertips, nails, wrinkles, and skin texture—stands out against the dark background, evoking a sense of the time and life that each person has lived.
One of the subjects is Araki Yoko, wife of photographer Araki Nobuyoshi, with whom Ishiuchi had a close relationship, and the opening page features a dedication to her: "to YOKO." Araki Yoko passed away in 1990, the year this book was published.
Ishiuchi herself has said that "the body is a vessel for time and air," and likens photographing the extremities of the body—the hands and feet—to "picking up scraps of skin that fall off."
Unlike fashion photography, which seeks out commercialized "beauty," this series focuses on the traces of time etched on the body, capturing their expressions in photographs.
As she confronts the limbs of her subjects, women of her generation, Ishiuchi seems to affirm that she herself has lived through the same time period, making this work an important part of her career history.
