Description from the seller
"Kamaitachi" (2009) is a photo collection by renowned Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe.
Through collaborations with artists such as his first photo collection, "Man and Woman," his first collaboration with Hijikata Tatsumi, and "Ordeal by Roses," with writer Yukio Mishima, Hosoe explored issues of life and sexuality that lie deep within humanity, and dedicated himself to free-spirited, experimental photographic expression.
His conceptual style and works incorporating traditional Japanese elements are considered to be among the works that brought global recognition to postwar Japanese photography.
This book is a reprint and popular edition of a photo collection originally published in 1969, marking the second collaboration with dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. The "kamaitachi" is a legendary creature that embodies the spiritual energy of Tohoku.
Hijikata takes on the role of this legendary figure and delivers a vivid performance set in downtown Tokyo and rural Akita, expressing the ripples created by encounters with people, the sensuality of the local climate, and the orgasms of life and death.
One of Eikoh Hosoe's early representative works, he portrays the intense aesthetic sense that dwells within the self through his exceptional visual aesthetics.
