Description from the seller
View of the Poste de l´Esperance on the Comewine/View of the Clarembeek Plantation on the Comewine (1798)
Double engraving on one sheet with two views of locations along the Commewijne River in Suriname: plantation Clarenbeek (also known / spelled as: Clarenbeeck, Claarenbeek, or Klarenbeek) and the military Post de Hoop.
The engraving is made by Tardieu (signed) and was published in 1798 in a French edition of the famous book by J.G. Stedman about Suriname.
John Gabriël Stedman (Dendermonde, 1744 – Devonshire, March 5, 1797) was a Scottish-Dutch officer in the Scottish Brigade of the Dutch army. He helped suppress a slave uprising in Suriname. He fell in love with a slave and tried to buy her freedom. He wrote the influential book *Travels to Suriname and through the interior regions of Guiana* about his experiences. In it, he openly expressed concern for the rights of slaves, particularly regarding whether they should be treated as human beings. His account of a story about the murder of a mulatto girl evolved over time into a legend about the slave Alida.
