Russian icon painted on wood depicting 'Maria, joy unexpected.' This beautiful panel highlights the great goodness of the Madonna.
It depicts the vision experienced by the character kneeling here, who, remorseful for the evil he had committed, went to the temple to seek forgiveness from the Mother Holy. Understanding that the repentance was sincere, she forgave him. School of Central Russia, 19th century.
