Wayang Topeng is a theatrical dance performance widespread in eastern Indonesia, based on the stories of the legendary Javanese prince Panji. Alongside the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the tales of Panji form the basis of the local epic and the wayang genre in its two versions: topeng (masked dance) and golek (shadow puppets). The mask, carved from hard wood and painted on the front, was worn by the dancer.
