Width: 140mm
Depth: 110mm

Plaque depicting a king or a warrior, and in all cases an important dignitary of the royal court, wearing layered necklaces of long coral beads and a collar of upside-down leopard teeth, characteristic attributes of the court of the Oba, reigning (or king) of the ancient Kingdom of Benin.
The art of Benin is described as court art because it is closely associated with the king, known as Oba. The tradition of bronze court objects from Ifé dates back to the 14th century. These rectangular-shaped altars were topped with heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells, and staffs. They served to commemorate an Oba and to connect with his spirit.
