A nice orange terracotta vessel with two pierced protruding lugs. Amlash terracotta vessels, such as this magnificent example, may have been inspired by similar metal objects from the same period, and were used in funerary contexts or on ritual occasions.
The term “Amlash culture” has generally been used to refer to the material cultures excavated at Gilan, an archaeological site located on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, and refers to a collection of Iron Age ceramics and metal objects with a strong visual character.
Provenance: Ex North London gentleman collection from the 1980s-990s; Den of Antiquity International Ltd., United Kingdom, 2020; Former Pablo H. Goizauskas Collection, Spain, 2025
*Slight chipped lug to rim, otherwise in good condition
