Ancient Roman terra sigillata fragments dating to the 1st–2nd century AD in very good condition, acquired from a private collection in the Netherlands in 2023 with a previous owner since 1990 and Netherlands provenance.
Description from the seller
Ancient Roman terra sigillata fragments. 1st–2nd century AD. Acquired from an old Dutch collection dating from before 1990.
The three fragments are made of red-gloss, finely filtered pottery typical of terra sigillata, a luxury Roman tableware. They exhibit both relief decoration and smooth, high-gloss surfaces, characteristic of stamp-decorated bowls and dishes.
- Fragment above
Shape and rim: A relatively thick-walled fragment, probably from the wall of a bowl or dish.
Decoratie:
Richly executed stamp relief with arched lines.
Within a medallion-shaped frame, an animal figure, possibly a bird, is visible. Below it, a seated hare.
In addition, half of a person and geometric motifs, such as circular and band-shaped patterns.
Style: Typical of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) or Central Gaulish production of the 1st–2nd century AD.
- Fragment left
Decoratie:
Clear representation of an animal in motion, probably a bull.
The background is slightly stylized; the image appears to have been applied with a form stamp.
Function: Probably originating from a figurative decorative field on the side of a bowl or dish.
Style: Typical of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) or Central Gaulish production of the 1st–2nd century AD.
-Fragment bottom right
Shape: Wall fragment with edge at the top, slightly curved outwards.
Decoratie:
Horizontal ribbed pattern below the edge (grid or grooved decoration). Below this is a frieze with curly plant motifs and a small floral rosette.
Style: Typical of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) or Central Gaulish production of the 1st–2nd century AD.
Shipping only within the EU.
