Jasper, a natural stone, is a sedimentary rock, meaning it forms from the accumulation of sediments deposited in layered strata. As you might have guessed, there are many different sedimentary rocks, and Jasper can have numerous colors (red, gray, brown, black, white, etc.) and different appearances (ocean, dalmatian, leopard, etc.). There are more than twenty different types of Jasper, each distinct from the others. Jasper is found worldwide (on every continent), but the most significant deposits are located in Brazil, India, Indonesia, the United States, Madagascar, Australia, Venezuela, Egypt, and Russia.
The story tells that one of the earliest mining sites discovered on Earth might be in Pennsylvania, United States, where it appears that Paleolithic peoples (the ancestors of Native Americans) dug to extract Jasper to use as knives and arrow points, but also to make pieces considered as jewelry, around 12,000 years ago.
The oldest discovery of Jasper stone tools was made in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia and has been dated to about 2.5 million years ago.
