Tapio Wirkkala was a multi-talented design genius, widely considered a leading figure in contemporary Finnish industrial art. Wirkkala's extensive portfolio encompasses glass, furniture, sculpture, city planning, art, graphic design, and even the creation of banknotes for the Finnish Treasury. As his international reputation grew, Wirkkala exhibited worldwide, but he was a recluse by nature. His favorite haunt was a spot so remote in the deep forests of central Finland that helicopters delivered prototypes to his home because no car could reach it. It was in the lap of nature that he found his beloved solitude and the inspiration to create forms that industry could not produce and art could not create. During his prolific career, Wirkkala received numerous awards, including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, the Pro Finlandia Medal, and the Prince Eugen Medal.
