Specimen Coco de Mer (Lodoicea maldivica) from Seychelles; weight 1140 g, dimensions 242 × 233 × 152 mm, known as The Largest Seed in the World.
Description from the seller
The 'Coco de Fesses' or 'Coco de Mer' of Seychelles is a remarkable botanical curiosity. This palm, scientifically known as Lodoicea maldivica, is one of the most extraordinary and iconic species in the world.
The legends about the Coco de Mer emerged after 1743, when the true Coco de Mer trees were discovered. During the Victorian era, General Charles George Gordon, who visited the Seychelles in 1881, believed that Vallée de Mai, on Praslin Island, was the original Garden of Eden as described in the Bible, and that the Coco de Mer was the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Even today, the Coco de Mer is called 'the fruit of Paradise'.
