Two large Java wooden figures, hand carved and polychrome, dating to 1930–1950, depicting a man and woman in ceremonial dress, each 63–65 cm tall, with original pedestals and aged patina.
Description from the seller
Special pair of large Javanese wooden statues – man and woman – hand-carved and hand-painted – Java, Indonesia – circa 1930–1950
A rare and characteristic set of two large, traditional Javanese sculptures depicting a couple in festive attire. The figures are skillfully carved from wood and richly painted with a combination of batik motifs, floral patterns, and traditional headdresses.
Features
Origin: Java, Indonesia.
Period: circa 1930–1950 (colonial / early post-colonial)
Material: cut and polychrome painted wood.
Height
Man: approx. 63–65 cm
Woman: approx. ± 63–65 cm
Condition: authentic state with signs of aging – craquelé, small cracks in the wood, faded paint patches; all consistent with age and use.
Details:
The woman wears a beautifully crafted silver-colored metal jewelry piece on a necklace (possibly alpaca/nickel silver).
The man is carrying a wooden calabash-shaped bottle on a cord.
Traditional Javanese clothing: kebaya, kain batik, blangkon/turban.
Both figures stand on original wooden bases.
Description
These large figures are typical of Javanese folk art from the mid-20th century. They were often created for ceremonial purposes, as wedding decorations or as representative figures for a pendopo or reception area. The combination of green lacquered jackets, batik motifs, and detailed accessories makes this duo particularly decorative and collectible.
Sets of this format and in original polychrome are becoming increasingly rare.
