Description from the seller
Donald Verslycken, alias Don Ken (born 1956), is a Belgian painter. His work is playful and universal, clearly showing pop art influences.
Don Ken trained as a photographer. He became world-famous as a fashion and advertising photographer, but now focuses primarily on his career as a painter. He is influenced by pop art and artists like Andy Warhol, and incorporates Disney and Warner Brothers characters into his work. This approach led to his big breakthrough.
Initially, he worked without permission from Disney Studios, and a lawsuit quickly followed. After months of negotiations with Disney, he succeeded in securing an exclusive agreement. Worldwide, Don Ken is now virtually the only artist permitted to use Mickey, Donald, and all other Disney characters in his work. Later, the artist signed a similar agreement with Warner Bros. for the reproduction of Looney Toones characters, such as the Road Runner and Bugs Bunny.
Don Ken's playful oeuvre consists primarily of paintings, but also includes three-dimensional objects, installations, and sculptures. With his unambiguous and positive message, the artist also achieved international success with exhibitions in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan, Singapore, and New York.
