"Out Kids Are Going to Hell" paints a portrait of a neighborhood and the inherent social interactions between youth, crime, and law. This book describes Hackney and East London but also offers commentary on a broader narrative familiar to all urban nocturnal confrontations. Robin Maddock spent three years following the local police in their work in Hackney, East London. His photographs revealed a sordid nocturnal story, plunging into a young universe often composed of minors, drugs, and crime, but also providing a wider perspective on society and its interactions with the law today. An endless cycle of police raids and arrests that never make the front pages of local newspapers: drugs are the most valuable element of these operations, coveted by both sides. Usually discreet when absent, they only become visible through confrontations, weapons, and the relentless flow of visitors to parents' homes. Glimpses of arrests, household accessories, and drug paraphernalia, set against the backdrop of Hackney’s ephemeral streets and staircases, will be familiar only to a few. The series presents a gallery of characters, on both sides of the law, playing their roles with the routine, monotonous ritual of a resigned and well-rehearsed routine.
