A fully original 19th-century five-piece walnut dining set crafted during the Dutch Willem III period around 1860-1880.
The set was manufactured at the 'Anna Paulowna Furniture Factory' by the Gebroeders Horrix. This furniture factory was the very first to use steam-powered machines in the furniture industry in 1851.
Matthijs Horrix, originally from Germany, was enrolled in the furniture makers' guild in The Hague in 1764 and established a workshop on Spuistraat in the same city that year.
He was the founder of the Netherlands' largest furniture-making family and royal suppliers, who closed their doors in 1890, leaving behind a 126-year rich furniture history!
The set is executed in their 'rustic line,' meaning the walnut wood has been processed/tr trimmed to simulate branches and tree bark.
The top and frame of the dining table are made from a light softwood species and finished with a thinner layer of solid walnut wood. This is a cost-saving measure to produce as much furniture as possible with walnut wood, which is more expensive compared to lighter (softwood) types. The tabletop is upholstered with reddish-brown (chestnut-colored) leather, and the table rests on elegantly shaped legs.
The seat rails of the chairs are made of beech wood, veneered with walnut veneer, with the front seat rail having a thinner layer of solid walnut wood. The front legs and the so-called back panel (rear legs, cap & lumbar rail) are entirely made of solid walnut wood. The chairs are upholstered with the same reddish-brown (chestnut-colored) leather as the tabletop. The upholstery is edged with a leather trim in the same color and secured with copper decorative nails.
All the reddish-brown (chestnut-colored) leather and the base of the upholstery are still original. It shows some signs of use and/or spots, and some chairs have upholstery that is slightly more used/sunken, but overall it remains in very good condition considering its age!
The woodwork has a beautiful deep, warm color and has developed a lovely patina and satin gloss over the years.
Stamps are applied to the underside of the table and on a seat rail of each chair, with one being more legible than the other.
A unique and completely original set that is in good condition and an absolute eye-catcher in anyone's interior!!!
