Description from the seller
Canon 514XL-S
Launched in September 1976.
Original price 83,500 yen
The magnetic tape was considered for the audio system of movie cameras from the introduction of the Super 8 system. Eastman Kodak Company introduced its magnetic recording system "Ektasound," integrated into the extended lower part of the Super 8 cartridge. CHINON Industries Inc. also produced a sound movie camera that sold very well. The sales of high-end silent movie cameras declined significantly from that point onward.
When development of a sound movie camera began, Canon sought compactness, as other sound cameras were quite large. In the end, Canon successfully developed a compact sound movie camera by installing the audio mechanism into the extended part of the base body of the 514XL. Although it was a compact model, the audio system was very sophisticated, with functions for controlling audio levels and tone selection. It had an impressive design, which included a new foldable grip containing AA batteries. It became a long-lasting success.
