Robert Mapplethorpe (November 4, 1946 – March 9, 1989) was an American artist, known for his photographs of flowers and (nude) models. The explicit, sometimes homosexual, eroticism of his works often led to complications, such as one of his first exhibitions being available only to an audience of 18 years or older [citation needed], and he sometimes encountered issues with authorities. From 1967, Mapplethorpe had a close bond (romantic relationship and later only friendship) with punk singer and poet Patti Smith.
