Description from the seller

Icon of Archangel Michael with the Holy Mandylion and Selected Saints

Russia, the end of the 19th century

Origin: European private collection
Region: Russia
Late 19th century
Egg tempera on board with levkas
Russian provincial school
Ships only to European countries.

Description

This iconic Russian panel depicts Archangel Michael in a central position, holding the Holy Mandylion — the 'Holy Face of Christ not made by human hands.' The composition is completed with a repertoire of selected saints, including hierarchs and martyrs, symmetrically arranged on both sides of the main figure.

The work presents a traditional structure executed in egg tempera on panel with levkas preparation, following the classical technique of Russian Orthodoxy. The background retains remnants of gold leaf, characteristic of provincial workshops from the second half of the 19th century. The figures feature fine outlines, dotted halos, and red stoles typical of late iconography.

Comment and analysis

The Archangel Michael, depicted with a dark tunic and a red cloak, holds the sacred veil in the position of honor, an element connecting to the devotion to the Mandylion of Edessa, one of the most revered symbols in Byzantine and Russian art. On the sides, saints bishops and martyrs are identified, probably Saint Nicholas, Saint Basil, or Saint Gregory, along with other warrior saints; a common repertoire in domestic protection icons.

The composition, balanced and sober, is characteristic of devotional icons from the late 19th century, with elongated shapes and a predominance of reddish and ochre tones. The panel shows wear, craquelure, and losses in the lower and edge areas, consistent with its age.
