Description from the seller
Original 2012 edition in mint condition of this rare monograph devoted to one of the great masters of contemporary Japanese photography, Yutaka Takanashi (born in 1935).
First print run.
This book appears in The Photobook, vol 1, by Martin Parr & Gerry Badger, page 302.
This reference work presents a masterful selection of his emblematic series, centered on the city, urbanity and its paradoxes, taken from his three major works: Toshi-e (Towards the City), Machi (City) and Golden-gai Bars.
Between raw realism and visual poetry, Takanashi explores Tokyo and its metamorphoses, playing on the contrast between intimate details and vast urban landscapes.
His images oscillate between the window (distanced gaze) and the mirror (intimate immersion), revealing a changing, fragmented but fascinating society.
The book includes:
- A retrospective approach to Takanashi's career, from the 1960s to the 2000s.
- Analytical texts (in French and English) by Olivier Andreotti, which place his work in the context of post-war Japan and contemporary photographic movements (Provoke, etc.).
- Prestigious publisher: RM Verlag / Toluca editions
- Format: 28.5 × 18 cm
- Binding: hardcover, published without dust jacket, as published
- High quality printing
- Number of pages: 192; including 73 four-color plates and 67 in black and white
Condition: This book is new, the blister pack was removed to take the presentation photographs.
This volume is a must-have for anyone interested in Japanese photography, the work of the Provoke generation (Takuma Nakahira, Daido Moriyama, etc.) and the evolution of urban representation in the second half of the 20th century.
A sought-after monograph, very difficult to find in mint condition.
It will be delivered in a carefully packaged, robust, and tracked package.
