U.S. aviation during World War II grew exponentially, transforming from a relatively small force into a dominant power with the production of about 300,000 aircraft, including icons like the P-51 Mustang fighter, the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, the P-47 Thunderbolt attack fighter, the P-38 Lightning twin-engine fighter, and the F4U Corsair carrier-based fighter. From the US Army Air Forces (USAAF) to the Navy and Marine Corps, American aviation was crucial in the European theater (strategic bombing) and the Pacific (air warfare and troop support), rapidly evolving and dominating the skies with innovations and numerical and technological superiority.

The North American P-51 Mustang is undoubtedly one of the most famous aircraft in military aviation history. Designed in record time, it made its debut in European skies in 1943 and quickly proved capable of opposing the BF-109 and FW-190 of the Luftwaffe, as well as later engaging Japanese fighters in the Pacific theater of operations. It is considered the best piston-engine fighter of World War II. It used the Packard 12-cylinder V engine capable of producing over 1,600 horsepower and allowing the Mustang to exceed 700 km/h. The P-51D, the most widely produced version, was armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns installed in the wings.

- The P-47 can be considered one of the most successful and renowned fighter aircraft of World War II. The single-seat, low-wing American fighter-bomber was characterized by the adoption of the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, which produced over 2,000 HP, allowing it to reach significant speeds especially at higher altitudes and ensuring extraordinary operational flexibility.
It delivered excellent performance even at low and medium altitudes, and had great damage tolerance thanks to air cooling. The P-47 was effective both as a fighter, for escorting bombers, and as a deadly aircraft for ground support and attack missions. Extremely robust in its structural design, it was heavily armed with eight Browning M2 machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber and could be equipped with bombs and rockets to increase its offensive capability. It was successfully used by the United States from 1943 onwards on various operational fronts.

- Like the evolution of its predecessor, the radial-engine Curtiss P-36, the Curtiss P-40 became one of the most famous and widely used aircraft of World War II. Between 1941 and 1944, it also played a crucial role, both as an air superiority fighter and as a fighter-bomber, in numerous operational theaters from North Africa to Italy, from China to the South Pacific. Characterized by a very robust and reliable aerodynamic structure, the Curtiss P-40 was equipped with an Allison V-12 engine capable of producing over 1,150 horsepower and reaching speeds of 580 km/h. The P-40B (Tomahawk Mk II) corresponds to a version with improved armament (two additional 7.7 mm guns in the wings) and increased armor (pilot protections and self-sealing tanks). It was delivered in 131 units to the USAAC and 110 to the RAF.

The US Navy carrier-based aircraft Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat was introduced in 1943 to replace the older Grumman F4F Wildcat and remained in service until the end of World War II, becoming a key player in the Pacific War. Designed to effectively counter the Japanese Zero, it was equipped with the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, producing 2,000 horsepower, which ensured high speed and excellent flight performance. Armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns installed in the wings, it proved to be extremely effective both in air superiority missions defending the fleet and in close support and ground attack missions. Despite its generous size, it was highly maneuverable, and thanks to its sturdy fuselage designed to withstand carrier operations, it could sustain extensive damage.
The significant ratio of enemy aircraft shot down compared to the losses sustained demonstrates the operational efficiency of the 'Hellcat' project. It was also used by the British Navy and, after World War II, by the French naval units during the First Indochina War in the 1950s.
