Description from the seller

Ancient Chinese, Northern Wei Pottery Archer Figure
Circa 4th-6th century AD
This impressive pottery archer figure depicts a standing male modelled with a tall coiffure and alert, finely delineated facial features. The figure wears a long, wrapped robe falling in straight folds to the ground, the cross-over collar, cuffs and hem highlighted with traces of painted bands. One arm is bent across the chest, while the opposite arm hangs by the side. Across the back runs a long quiver slung diagonally from shoulder to hip.
The Northern Wei Dynasty, which spanned from 386 to 534 AD, marked a significant period in Chinese history. Established by Emperor Daowu, the dynasty emerged from the disintegration of the Jin Dynasty, consolidating power over northern China. This period witnessed a flourishing of Buddhist art and sculpture, contributing to the rich cultural and artistic legacy of China.
Dimensions: 24cm x 6cm x 5g
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
