Description
An original Edo-period woodblock-printed map titled “Tōto Aoyama Ezu” (Map of Aoyama District, Eastern Capital), published by Kinrin-dō (Owariya Seishichi) in 1853 (Kaei 6) and revised in 1857 (Ansei 4).
This historical map depicts the Aoyama and Shibuya areas of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), including major temples, samurai residences, and waterways, offering a fascinating insight into the city’s landscape in the mid-19th century.
The Edo Kiriezu series, to which this belongs, was a popular form of urban mapping during the late Edo period, designed for travelers and townspeople. The distinctive coloring and fine woodblock printing techniques make these maps not only practical guides but also works of art.
This particular edition by Owariya Seishichi (金鱗堂 尾張屋清七) is highly collectible due to its fine detail, publisher’s prestige, and the fact that Aoyama and Shibuya were among the most desirable residential and cultural areas of Edo.
