Description from the seller
Märklin 74924 - Railway crossing with one track, with half barriers, pre-assembled.
To connect directly to C-rails. Two electromagnetic barrier gates, each with two red warning lights that activate when the gates are closed.
Ready to connect, easy installation. Contact rail set:
3 right rails, each 94.2 mm.
Dimensions of each pedestal 137 x 95 mm.
An expansion set with a filler piece for between the rail sections, adjustable in length, and including three rails (item no. 74930), is also available.
Technique
The Andreaskruisen contain red lights. The half barriers are attracted by magnets as soon as they receive power. The operation of the level crossing is based on contact rails, which means that one rail is isolated from ground. The yellow wire from the light transformer (power wire) is connected to the level crossing. When a train passes over a contact rail, the chassis of the locomotive and wagons connect the ground rail with the isolated rail via the wheel axles (ground detection). This also provides ground contact, and as long as a train or wagon is between the contact rails, current continues to flow, keeping the magnets of the barriers energized and the lights on. The contact rails do not need to be directly connected to the track but can be placed further apart. However, then all rails placed between them must be insulated from each other. Instructions on how to do this can be found here. The axles of the locomotive and wagons should be alternating current axles; otherwise, the ground from the rail will not be transmitted to the isolated rail.
