Description from the seller

Copy of the painting by François Gérard (1770-1837) with an autograph inscription at the top of the title: 'offered by the author to Mr. Baron Gérard, First Painter to the King.'

A student of Jacques-Louis David, François Gérard was one of the leading painters of the First Empire and the Restoration. Court painter under Napoleon I, then First Painter to the kings Louis XVIII and Charles X, Gérard enjoyed great fame, not only in France but also across Europe. Nicknamed 'the painter of kings, the king of painters,' he was indeed the portraitist of all European royal families.

Original edition of this rare publication showcasing the works exhibited at the 1824 painting and sculpture salon. Beautiful impression on laid paper.

Well complete with the 8 lithographs by Langlumé, of which the third depicts the famous Delacroix painting 'Scenes of the Massacres at Scio.'

Bradel, half-percaline Bordeaux, decorated smooth spine with gold title and fleur-de-lis.

Spine worn, some scattered foxing inside. A good copy.

Signed: Auguste Chauvin
Salon of 1824 [an example by François Gérard, with inscription]
Paris, Chez Pillet Ainé, 1825
in-8 (21 x 13 cm); 315 pages.
