Description from the seller
Fabrication: LARDOT & BOYON
France, circa 1930
Veined yellow marble, Portor black marble, metal dial with a patinated floral decoration, mechanical movement.
Dimensions: Width 57 cm – Height 27 cm – Depth 15 cm
Impressive Art Deco-style mantel clock, crafted by the house of Lardot & Boyon, renowned for its creations in marble and hard stone during the interwar period. The whole is built around a play of architecturally structured volumes, typical of the era, where geometric rigor, richness of materials, and decorative elegance intertwine.
The body of the clock is made of a magnificent veined yellow marble, with warm tones ranging from ochre, amber, to honey, streaked with brown and violet veins. These natural layers form a spectacular graphic network that emphasizes the monumentality of the piece. The sides and the base are accented with elements in Portor black marble, recognizable by its bright golden veins, creating a striking contrast that is quintessentially Art Deco.
In the center, an octagonal dial in patinated metal stands out clearly against the marble. The embossed numbers, stylized and slightly elongated, are directly inspired by the graphic vocabulary of the 1920s–1930s. They are arranged around a decorative pattern of stylized flowers in a rosette, finely carved. The frame of the dial, also in patinated metal, features ridged lines and discreet arabesque motifs, while the sides are adorned with a lush relief decoration composed of stylized flowers, leaves, and fruits, typical of the transition between late Art Nouveau and emerging Art Deco.
The entire façade features a harmonious combination of gentle curves (upper arch), polished flat surfaces, and rectangular volumes, giving the clock a remarkable sculptural presence. The back is open with a circular oculus allowing access to the mechanical movement, originally visible through the opening. The base rests on four small integrated pads.
Note: A lack of marble on the left side, the entire pendulum needs to be revised, I have the balance wheel and it will be included. The two front face hands are also missing. It will be a superb object after restoration.
