Magnum The History The images + Ferdinando Scianna (First edition) *See conditions
Ferdinando Scianna is a prominent figure in the history of Italian photography, known for being the first Italian photojournalist to join Magnum Photos.
The beginning of his career and meeting Cartier-Bresson: Scianna started his career photographing his native Sicily, a work that culminated in the book 'Religious Festivals in Sicily' (1965), with texts by Leonardo Sciascia, for which he won the Prix Nadar in 1966. In the 1970s, while working as a journalist for magazines like L'Europeo and writing for Le Monde Diplomatique and La Quinzaine Littéraire, he met Henri Cartier-Bresson.
It was Cartier-Bresson himself who invited him to join the prestigious agency Magnum Photos. Scianna first became an associate member of Magnum in 1982 and a full member in 1989.
Collaborations and style: Scianna used photography as a "filter to connect with the world." His work for Magnum ranges from photojournalism to fashion photography (his famous collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana in the 1980s) and portraits, always maintaining a distinctive style, often in black and white, characterized by strong compositions and a profound narrative.
