- This piece will not be shipped outside the European Union -

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 1550 - 1070 BC.

Alabaster.

5.4 cm height.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, England, acquired in the 1980s.

CONDITION: In a good state of preservation. With some scratching to the lip.

DESCRIPTION:

A vessel of the type called a pilgrim flask, due to the fact that it was easy to transport given the flattened globular form of its body and the two small handles on either side of the neck through which a cord could be passed to hang the vessel. It has been made from a single piece of alabaster. The veining of this material can be seen on the outside of the flask. The interior has been hollowed out by trepanning, while the exterior has been carved and polished.

Recipients of this type were left in tombs as they were elements for the storing of food and cosmetics that the deceased would need for nurture in the Other World. They have only been found in royal tombs and those of members of the highest ranks of society.
