Yang Seungwook - Play Toy - 2019

In a satirical, queer variant of the well-known adult magazine, Play Toy stages erotic encounters between famous male action figures against life-sized domestic backgrounds. On one page, a plastic Steve Irwin lies in a bath with soap while a monster with green scales holds his head, a look of ecstatic surprise permanently etched on the zookeeper's face. On another page, two superheroes embrace and kiss against a backdrop of brightly colored floral fabric. These images by Yang Seungwook, winner of the Pride Photo Award 2019, engage in a dialogue with a queer exploration of sexuality from childhood, based on privately staged romantic scenarios between supposedly heteronormative characters. Play Toy also, in an ironic way, comments on the fetishization of cartoons by adults.
