- Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) was one of the most celebrated painters of the Spanish Baroque, known for his deeply emotive religious works and masterful use of light and color. Born and based in Seville, Murillo developed a unique style that combined the dramatic realism of Caravaggisti with a softer, more sentimental tone, particularly evident in his depictions of the Virgin, Christ, and everyday street life.

Murillo's religious compositions were especially influential in shaping Counter-Reformation art in Spain, aiming to inspire devotion through emotional intimacy and tenderness. His brushwork is known for its delicacy and warmth, often contrasting with the harsher tenebrism of his contemporaries. Alongside sacred themes, he also produced genre scenes depicting beggars and children, which were highly popular among foreign collectors.

One of his notable works, 'Ecce Homo' (c. 1660–1670), depicts Christ crowned with thorns and draped in a red robe, gazing downward with serene sorrow. The composition conveys a profound sense of compassion and humanity, with Murillo’s characteristic soft modeling of flesh tones and subtle chiaroscuro. This painting reflects his mature period, where emotional expressiveness took precedence over dramatic theatricality.

Today, Murillo's works are highly valued in the art market and museum collections worldwide. While many remain in public institutions, others have fetched significant prices at international auctions.
