Industrial designer Otto Zapf was born in 1931 in Rossbach, former Czechoslovakia, into a family of cabinetmakers. In 1945, his family moved to Germany, to Eschborn near Frankfurt, where, discouraged by the dust from his father's carpentry workshop, young Zapf decided to study mathematics and physics at Goethe University. When he returned to furniture design and production, his knowledge of mathematics helped him optimize his projects.

Hans Knoll was born in 1914 in Stuttgart, Germany, into the fortunate family that founded Walter Knoll & Co. Early twentieth-century Germany was the epicenter of modern design theory, particularly expressed by the artistic association Deutscher Werkbund, which included architects, designers, industrialists, and artists from the renowned Bauhaus, celebrating a design based on principles of rationality, functionality, and mass production. These ideas had a strong impact on young Hans and would inspire him to create and produce furniture for a new era. In 1937, after a brief stop in London, he moved to the United States, bringing his vision with him.
