René Burri (Zurich, April 9, 1933 – Zurich, October 20, 2014) was a Swiss photographer, best known for his reports on some of the most important historical and cultural events of the second half of the twentieth century.
He was only 22 years old when Magnum Photos published his reportage, and he continued to work consistently with major international magazines such as Life, Look, Fortune, Epoca, Paris Match, Stern, and Bunte Illustrierte. Some of his most famous portraits include those of Che Guevara and Pablo Picasso.
Before photography, his passions were painting and cinema, and it was for this reason and to improve his knowledge that he decided to attend the Zurich School of Art, where he had the opportunity to study composition, painting, and drawing.
After finishing school, he tried to pursue this passion by venturing into the world of cinema, but the opportunities available in Switzerland at that time were really limited. He then decided to dedicate himself to photography, which closely relates to the world of cinema. In 1950, at the age of 17, he enrolled in his city's photography school. It was during these years that he began working as a director and creating his first documentaries. Simultaneously, he started using his first camera, a Leica.
In 1955, his friend Werner Bischof approached him, connecting him with the Magnum Photos agency, where he presented his photojournalistic work on the reality of deaf-mute children. The report, to Burri's great satisfaction, was published in the prestigious Life magazine as well as in other important European magazines. Joining the Magnum Photos team, he began his intense activity as a photojournalist traveling around the world to carry out assignments commissioned by Magnum. These were the years when Burri traveled to Italy, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, Egypt, and other countries.
In 1959, he became a member of Magnum. He published his work on Germany curated by Robert Delpire and with an introduction by Jean Boudrillard. Throughout the 1960s, he also produced other important reports. Notably, those from 1963 on Picasso and subsequently on Alberto Giacometti and Le Corbusier. Also in 1963, he created portraits of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. In the second half of the 1960s and the 1970s, he worked in Egypt, Israel, Vietnam, and Beirut. In 1982, he became president of Magnum Photos. In 1991, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French state, and in 2004, a major retrospective was held, which arrived in Italy in 2005.
Magnum Photos is one of the most important photographic agencies in the world. Founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour, George Rodger, and William Vandivert, it is legally structured as a cooperative society, bringing together sixty of the world's top photographers, also with the aim of protecting copyright in the photographic field and ensuring transparency of information. Until 2014, the CEO was Italian Giorgio Psacharopulo, and from 2011 to 2014, the president was also Italian, war photojournalist Alex Majoli. The current management team includes: Cristina de Middel (President), Bruce Gilden (Vice President, New York), Mark Power (Vice President, London), Richard Kalvar (Vice President, Paris), Alec Soth, Jim Goldberg, Carl de Keyzer, Alex Majoli, Richard Kalvar, Newsha Tavakolian, Mikhael Subotzky, Larry Towell, Emin Ozmen, Patrick Sutter (Property Representative), Fiona Naylor (Independent Director), and Susan Meiselas (Magnum Foundation). Magnum's professional ethics stipulate that the images taken remain the property of the Magnum photographer and not of the magazines in which they are published, allowing the author to choose subjects, themes, and steer production towards a style more consistent with the photographer's own, free from constraints.
