Description from the seller
Painted Alpine Bed Cover Chest (late 1700s – early 1800s)
Probable area: Cadore / Bellunese – Eastern Trentino
General description
Antique women's accessory box, handcrafted between the late 18th century and the early decades of the 19th century. Highly probable provenance from the Alpine area of Northeast Italy — particularly Cadore (Belluno) or Eastern Trentino, regions known for their painted household items.
It is an original and rare piece of furniture, characterized by interior painting that perfectly aligns with the traditional Cadorine decorative styles of the time.
Main features
Structure
Made of solid wood, with whole planks typical of pre-industrial production.
Manual assembly with hand-forged nails and period joints.
Preserves the original patina from the 18th–19th century.
Tool
Handcrafted wrought iron side handles.
Original hinges and locks, hand-made.
Lock plate with irregular nail placement, typical of the period.
Interior decoration — an element of high quality
Inside the lid, there is an original tempera painting depicting:
A crenellated tower
Tower with Guelph battlements, stair-step base, and arched door.
Typical iconography of ancient civic or community coats of arms from the Alps.
Three eight-pointed stars
Significant heraldic symbol: protection, antiquity, prestige of the community.
The eight-pointed stars are characteristic of the Alpine Rules, rural communities of Cadore, Belluno, Comelico, and Primiero.
Popular rococo floral cornice
Stylized plant motifs typical of female decoration in wedding trousseaus from the late 1700s.
Authenticity
Unretouched painting, with an antique patina and original colors (powder blue, ochre, white, Siena earth).
Usury consistent with age.
Dimensions
Length: 57 cm
Width: 32 cm
Height: 32 cm
Measurements of personal luggage trunks, not travel trunks or chests of drawers.
Most probable origin
Crossing style, iconography, technique, and heraldic theme.
Probable origin: CADORE (Bellunese)
or
Eastern Trentino (Tesino, Primiero, Fiemme)
Zones where they were common in the late 18th century.

embroidered linen
the bride's personal belongings
small domestic or symbolic effects
These suitcases accompanied the woman during her wedding or family transfers.
