Description from the seller

Roman Copper-Alloy Disc Brooch (c. AD 100–200) – Converted into a Modern Pendant

This listing offers an authentic Roman copper-alloy disc brooch, dating to approximately AD 100–200, expertly transformed into a contemporary pendant while preserving the integrity and character of the ancient artefact. The brooch is recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under Record ID: DUR-9B056E, ensuring verified provenance and historical documentation.

Description of the Artefact

The original brooch is a flat, circular disc fibula, decorated with a central raised pellet and bordered by an outer ring of pellets. Traces of ancient blue enamel remain visible within the outer ring, now aged to pale tones, consistent with Roman enamel work of the 2nd century.

The inner circle once held enamel as well, now lost to time, revealing its underlying casting structure. The reverse retains the catchplate and hinge area, though the pin was already missing at the time of discovery.

Classification (per PAS report)

Type: Disc brooch

Sub-class: Mackreth Type 2.g

Material: Copper alloy

Manufacture: Cast

Date: c. AD 100–200

This type of brooch is associated with “British” regional production and is typically found across coastal and inland areas north of the Bristol Channel, but is comparatively less common in northern England.

Modern Mounting

The ancient brooch has been professionally set into a silver-plated round pendant mount, allowing it to be worn while protecting the archaeological material.
It comes on a 17-inch faux leather cord, creating a clean and stylish contrast with the patinated bronze and surviving enamel. The mounting does not damage or alter the original artefact, which remains fully visible.
