AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Very rare early 17th-century (ca. 1620–1640) Dutch majolica plate decorated with Cupid jumping rope, set on a ground with vegetation. The rim is decorated with an aigrette-pattern. This type of Dutch majolica is inspired by contemporary Italian majolica and faience. The decoration is typical for the workshop of Willem Verstraeten in Haarlem. However, production waste found during archaeological excavations in Hoorn shows that similar majolica plates were also made there.

Condition: old restorations, the plate was originally broken into four fragments and is ca. 85% complete.

Dimensions: ca. 18 (⌀) x 3 (height) cm.

Literature: Schrickx, C. P. 2016. Productieafval van de plateelbakkerij aan de Wortelvesten: Archeologisch onderzoek op het perceel op de hoek van de Koepoortsweg en de Spoorsingel. West-Friese Archeologische Rapporten 93. Hoorn: Archeologie West-Friesland.
