Gran Descalzadora Luis XVI, a seating bench in antique Louis XVI style, made of wood and textile, from France (c. 1850–1900), 110 cm wide, 40 cm deep and 62 cm high, in good used condition with minor signs of age and imperfections.
Description from the seller
This antique Louis XVI-style shoehorn is a refined piece of furniture that embodies the elegance and decorative balance characteristic of 18th-century France. Its dark wood structure, likely walnut or mahogany, features smooth lines and harmonious proportions, with carved cabriole legs that evoke the neoclassical aesthetic inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity.
The curved design with arms raised at both ends not only provides comfort but also an air of ceremony, as if inviting rest in an aristocratic salon. The original upholstery in two tones—with vertical gold and brown stripes adorned with floral motifs—reflects the taste for rich, ornamental textiles that prevailed in the era.
This type of bench, known as a shoe bench or bedroom stool, was common in noble rooms, where it was used for sitting while dressing or undressing. In the Louis XVI style, a return to classic sobriety was sought after the excesses of Rococo, resulting in straighter forms, symmetry, and more restrained yet equally sophisticated decoration.
Today, this piece not only retains its functionality but also serves as a tangible testament to French decorative art, making it ideal for environments seeking a touch of history and distinction.
Certified shipping and good packaging.
