Description from the seller
Patti Smith & Robert Mapplethorpe
Hand signed and Certificate of Authenticity, very specia created with hand-made process. 32.5x24.5cm
DESIRE documents Patti and Robert Mapplethorpe first photo shoot together, one of two sittings – 1968 at Patti and Robert’s Hall Street space in Brooklyn, 1969 at Lloyd’s tiny apartment on Charles Street, the heart of Greenwich Village, New York City. There’s an alluring trance about both sessions but Patti and Robert don’t appear as music or art icons, rather as something more real and intimate. Arranging and creating their own language – a unique dialogue that continues to provoke and challenge today. Lloyd’s images reflect a diverse and complex world, a place where the rules are not so rigid. Celebrating 50 years, these rare works hold something of the eternal – fantasy, youth and romantic rebellion.
Bringing together over 65 unpublished works, with the inclusion of many New York street photographs together with the original contact sheets, and personal notes, form a deep narrative, where such parallel histories run side by side. 128 pages bound in a natural white, hard-back cover, protected foiled with black ebony embossed type. Now Mapplethorpe is one of the best photographers of the world as Henry Cartier Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Capa or Helmut Newton and one of the besta artist of the 20th as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst or Banksy. The exterior paper bags are hand-sewn and may contain some natural creasing with imperfections due to the hand-made process.
